Antibiotics » DOXYCYCLINE (dox-i-SYE-kleen)

Doxycycline used to treat infections and to help control acne. Doxycycline is a type of Tertacycline.

Drink plenty of fluids and this medicine can be taken with food or milk if it upsets your stomach. Tetracyclines may cause permanently discolored teeth and other problems in this age group.

If any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome inform your health care professional immediately and if you notice any other unusal symptoms:
Hives
Itching
Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes
Dark yellow or brown urine
Itching in the rectal or genital area
Pain on swallowing
Tingling or numbness of the hands or feet

Inform your health care professional if you are allergic to Doxycycline and or any other medication. Also inform your doctor if you are taking any other medication of any nature.

Anticoagulant therapy
Penicillins
Methoxyflurane
Oral contraceptives
Antacids
Barbiturate medication
Calcium salts
Carbamazepine
Cholestyramine
Colestipol
Digoxin

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Doxycycline should not be given to infants or children 8 years of age & younger unless directed by your doctor.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible, to keep a constant amount of medicine in the blood or urine. But, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
Do not double doses.

It kills certain bacteria that cause infection, or stops their growth and also helps control acne.

Doxycycline also may be used for other problems as determined by your doctor.

Store at room temperature, approximately 25 degrees C (77 degrees F). Protect from light.

Birth Control containing Estrogen may not work properly if you take them while you are taking doxycycline.
Stay out of direct sunlight as your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight than it is normally.
If you are being treated for a STD, avoid sexual contact until you have finished your treatment.
Make sure your diest includes plenty of Vitamin B.
